Code of Practice for Local Committee Members
The following is not a definitive statement of responsibilities but is concerned with the common understanding of broad principles by which governors will operate.
The Governors accept the following principles:
- We have a responsibility to attend relevant governor meetings and will conduct the school with a view to promoting high standards of educational achievement and emotional and physical wellbeing.
- We will take responsibility for determining, monitoring and keeping under review, the broad policies, plans and procedures within which the academy operates; we recognise that it is the Headteacher who is responsible for the implementation of policy, day to day management of the academy and the operation of the curriculum. We are not expected to become involved in day to day management issues.
- We have a general duty to act fairly and without prejudice at all times.
- In so far as we have, or share, responsibility for the employment of staff, we will strive to fulfil all reasonable expectations of a good employer.
- We will consider carefully how our own decisions might affect our Trust and other schools.
- We will encourage open governance through good communication systems with the academy community.
- We understand that all governors have equal status and although governors are appointed differently their central concern should be the welfare of the academy as a whole.
We have a responsibility to attend relevant governor training sessions to obtain basic information on our role
and responsibilities and to keep updated with changes brought about by legislation and innovations in education.
- We will establish and publicise procedures for dealing with complaints.
We will involve ourselves actively in the work of the Local Governing Body and accept a fair
share of responsibilities and tasks.
- We must know the school well and take all possible opportunities for involvement in academy activities.
- Accordingly, we accept the following is a guide for our involvement:
- Attend all LGB meetings having read all the papers
- Make a positive contribution to each meeting by, for example, asking at least two questions
- Except for staff governors, sit on another committee within the Trust or undertake some other activity such as attend parents evenings
- Except for staff governors, visit the school (if convenient to the school) once a term/attend some sort of ad hoc meeting/panel
- Be responsible for a specific area (i.e. be a ‘link governor’) and write a report on it each year. Areas could be PPG, SEN, Safeguarding, behaviour, EYFS and many others,
- Undertake some sort of training each year.
- We will strive to operate as a team in which constructive working relationships are actively promoted.
- We will develop effective working relationships with the Headteacher, staff, students, parents groups and other relevant agencies.
- We will respect complete confidentiality at all times, especially in relation to matters concerning individual staff or pupils.
- Although decisions reached at governors' meetings are normally made public through minutes or otherwise, the discussions on which the decisions are based will be regarded as confidential.
- We will exercise the highest degree of prudence when discussions of potentially contentious issues arise outside of the local governing body.
- We will express our views openly within meetings and accept collective responsibility for all decisions.
- We will only speak or act on behalf of the local governing body when we have been specifically authorised to do so.
- All visits to the school will be undertaken within a framework, which has been established by the governing body and agreed with the Headteacher.
- In responding to criticism or complaints relating to the academy, we will follow procedures established by the Trust.
- We have a responsibility to maintain and develop the ethos and reputation of the academy; our actions within the academy community will reflect this.
This Code of Practice was adopted by Trust Directors in September 2016.
