Our Curriculum Statement
At Hayes Primary school we have given careful consideration to our pupils’ background, life experiences and culture when designing our curriculum. Our school values form the priorities that underpin the curriculum design of each subject area. We believe that by focussing on our school values our children will be prepared and ready to meet the challenges of the next steps of their education and life.
Our school values:
Excellence – We aim to encourage and nurture our children’s aspirations and show them, through a range of experiences, the possibilities available for their future. We have high expectations for each child and actively encourage them to fulfil their potential.
Respect – We are determined to develop our children’s respect and tolerance for other’s opinions and beliefs. We believe that our children should be polite, open minded members of society and we aim to equip them with a range of strategies for developing respect for themselves and others.
Responsibility – We firmly believe that children should take responsibility for themselves and fundamentally believe this is essential in developing independent, lifelong learners.
Resilience – We encourage children to have a positive attitude to their work and life in general and view it as our duty to prepare children for the ever changing world we live in. We feel this comes from exposing children to a wide variety of situations that challenge their ideas, whilst providing a safe place for them to develop their ability to adapt to different situations and learn from their mistakes.
Community – We are passionate about developing a sense of community within our children, and encourage them to think of themselves not only as citizens of their local area but global citizens. We provide situations where they can develop strong relationships and become good team players.
Compassion – We encourage our children to view situations from a range of different perspectives and develop an understanding of situations that are different to their own. We provide experiences for children to show kindness to others and develop tolerance for others.
We have designed and planned our curriculum to include a range of experiences which means that every child receives a full and rich curriculum at all stages of their learning at Hayes Primary School. The experiences we offer are underpinned by our culture and values and ensure that our children benefit from a range of academic, spiritual, moral, social and cultural activities. These activities are designed to enrich the lives of our whole school community and make them proud of their British values and the diverse society in which we live. We are proud to set high expectations of our curriculum and believe that our curriculum gives our children the skills, confidence and self-belief to lead a happy and fulfilled life by encouraging them to aim high and work towards their goals in life.
We define progress as the widening and deepening of essential knowledge, skills, understanding and learning behaviours. We design, organise and plan our curriculum to ensure that children are not merely covering content but achieving a depth to their learning which enables them to use their skills and understanding in all areas of the curriculum.
At Hayes Primary School we firmly believe that all children should feel valued and know the feeling of success in a range of curriculum areas. We believe that through the curriculum we can impact how a child feels about themselves and ultimately want all our children to feel clever, confident and ready to tackle any challenge they may face.
We have designed our curriculum to ensure that every child receives a broad, balanced curriculum including an appropriate mix of academic and personal development, meaning that we place equal importance on core and foundation subjects. We build in opportunities for repetition and practise for essential knowledge, skills and understanding in every subject. This ensures that children revisit previous learning, which allows them to gradually develop a deeper understanding of each subject, at their own pace and in the best possible way for each individual child.
We understand that children will not be successful learners unless they are emotionally secure; therefore we have developed a curriculum that reflects the high priority we place on our children’s physical and mental health wellbeing. Through our curriculum we ensure that we are flexible and ready to meet and respond to any issues that arise as children’s physical and mental health wellbeing are as valued and important as academic development. Our thoughtful approach to SMSC helps to ensure that every child is well cared for and supported.
Our balanced approach to the curriculum is not at the expense of high standards in core subject areas. High standards and enabling children to reach national expectations and above is of vital importance if they are to succeed at the next stage of their education and go on to achieve full and happy lives and careers.
Our full and rich curriculum, with its excellent range of experiences, is meticulously planned to move on children’s thinking as well as acquisition of knowledge and ensures that every pupil at Hayes Primary School makes excellent progress both academically and personally. Our unique curriculum ensures that every child is given the opportunity to shine and flourish.
